Dog Age Calculator

Convert your dog's age to human years with the modern, size-adjusted veterinary formula — not the outdated "multiply by 7" myth.

How Old Is Your Dog in Human Years?

How This Calculator Works

Veterinary research shows dogs mature very quickly early in life and then age at a steadier pace that depends on their adult size. This calculator uses the widely accepted modern guideline: a dog's first year equals about 15 human years, the second year adds about 9 more (so a 2-year-old dog is roughly 24), and every year after that adds 4 to 6 human years depending on size class — about 4 for small breeds, 4.5 for medium, 5 for large, and 6 for giant breeds.

This is why the old "1 dog year = 7 human years" rule misleads in both directions: it dramatically understates how mature a young dog is, and overstates the aging rate of small breeds later in life. A 1-year-old puppy is not a 7-year-old child — biologically, it is closer to a teenager.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one dog year really seven human years?

No — that rule is a marketing-era myth. Dogs reach adolescence within a year and full maturity by two. After that, aging speed depends heavily on size: small dogs gain about 4 human years per calendar year, giant breeds about 6.

How old is a 2-year-old dog in human years?

Roughly 24, regardless of breed size — about 15 human years for the first year and 9 for the second.

Why do small dogs live longer than big dogs?

Large breeds age faster at the cellular level and encounter age-related conditions earlier. A 10-year-old Chihuahua is about 56 in human years; a 10-year-old Great Dane is about 72.

When is a dog considered a senior?

Giant breeds around age 6, large breeds around 7, and small breeds around 8–9. Regular senior wellness checks are worth discussing with your vet from those ages onward.
